William of Poitiers brings us closer to the heart of Normandy in the mid-eleventh century than any other writer of that age or later.” R. Allen Brown

This website has been set up as part of a University of Sheffield undergraduate seminar project for the History module HST 2023 ‘1066 and all that’ under the supervision of Dr Charles West.

It aims to provide an overview of the panegyric biography of William of Normandy written by William of Poitiers in the 11th century. The sections of the site concentrate on the history of the source, its strengths and weaknesses as a historical source, and also, what it can tell the historian about Norman society and it hierarchical structure.
